If one needs to find an example of a former top footballer clinging to past glories in a desperate attempt at finding suitors, then look no further at the antics of Michael Owen following Newcastle Uniteds relegation in 2009. Having essentially downed tools and apathetically lumbered around Villa Park as the club sank into the Championship abyss, the former England international was reduced to sending out a brochure to potential employers in a bid to jog their memories about what he was able to provide once upon a time. When his beloved Liverpool turned him down, it looked like he was odds-on to sign for either Stoke or Hull City - neither a particularly mouth-watering opportunity. Then, it happened - the image that Reds supporters never thought they would ever have to witness - their former hero kitted out in full Manchester United gear holding up the club scarf, with a big grin etched across his face. Not only was this move a surprise for Manchester United, considering the calibre of club that were vying for Owens services following years of under-performing and time spent in the infirmary, but it seemed to be deliberately besmirching his reputation at Anfield. Having rejected the club as a 12 year old, the former Liverpool hit-man had finally found his way to Old Trafford as an arguably washed-up 29 year old. It was a shame to see a former international, who used to have the pick of the top teams, reduced to settling for his former sides fiercest rivals as the only alternative to a probable second successive relegation from the top-flight.
