10 Players Nobody Expected Man Utd To Sign

3. Radamel Falcao

Radamel Falcao could very well be the best centre-forward in world football. Boasting a commanding physique, an explosive shot, and an aerial threat to rival the very best, the former FC Porto and Athletico Madrid front-man has long been regarded as one of the deadliest strikers in world football. It is for these reasons why it was such a surprise to see him arrive at Manchester United - a club without European football - and on loan. Having sealed the purchases of Ander Herrera, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw, Daley Blind and Angel Di Maria, it looked like Louis van Gaal had finished as far as transfer dealings were concerned. With the clock ticking towards the close of the summer transfer window, an addition to the back line could have helped, but another attacking option would have been fantasy considering the array of talent already on show. The sub-plot from France had been that Falcao had been omitted from Monaco€™s Ligue 1 clash with Lille, but were the Columbian attacker to leave, surely Real Madrid would be his destination. Then the news that shattered sports media outlets everywhere broke - Man United had agreed a sensational deadline-day £6 million loan deal for the 28 year old Monaco forward. With Red Devils supporters left to bite their fingernails all day long, their fears regarding last-minute hitches were put to rest 12 hours later as the move was confirmed an hour after the official deadline had closed. It was a remarkable signing by the club to ensnare one of the most prolific goal-scorers in world footballers, considering the plethora of attacking options already at van Gaal€™s disposal, in stark contrast to their threadbare deficiencies at the back.
