10 Players Nobody Expected Spurs To Sign

1. Robbie Keane

In terms of emotional departures, Robbie Keane€™s exit from Spurs in the summer of 2008 was up there. Having finally put a piece of silverware in the trophy cabinet at White Hart Lane in February 2008, hearts were smashed into smithereens around north London as Liverpool lured their prolific hotshot of six seasons in a £19 million deal. It may not have been something they were prepared for, but neither were the events that transpired six months later, when Keane ambled back to White Hart Lane with his tail between his legs. Keane hadn€™t settled on Merseyside, failing to find the back of the net in the league until November. With pressure mounting on the expensive signing, he had drawn a number of critics, but nobody really believed that Liverpool were going to cut their losses after a season - and certainly not within a few months. Spurs offered £12 million on transfer deadline day, and Keane subsequently rejoined his old club on February 2 2009, much to the bemusement of onlookers.
''It was a difficult decision to make to leave Tottenham in the summer. It proved not to be right move for me. I know some Spurs fans will feel I let them down - but I can assure them I۪ll be giving them my all.۪۪ - Robbie Keane, February 2009.
