10 Players Who "Could Be Like New Signings" For Newcastle Boss Steve McClaren

9. Jamaal Lascelles

One half of the duo signed from Nottingham Forest last summer and then immediately loaned back to the Midlands club, Jamaal Lascelles did not exactly set the world alight at the City Ground but he will become a fully-fledged Magpie this season. Seeing as Lascelles was 50% of the entire fee paid for the Forest duo, the £3.5 million the Magpies have invested for the 21-year-old centre-back seems a modest price to pay. However, Lascelles did not have a great season back on loan at Forest - both on and off the pitch. In December, the defender appeared in court over an alleged assault in a Derby nightclub - although all charges were dropped. Then on the field, Lascelles started just 20 Championship games as he struggled to get into the Forest first team. But he is young and still has time to develop - and he has all the raw attributes to be a success - and therefore Steve McClaren may be enthused by the prospect of a player who is certainly a powerful and physical unit. Lascelles was in the Forest youth set-up when McClaren was manager at the City Ground and he will give a much-needed alternative to the Mike Williamson-Fabricio Coloccini central-defensive duo. Seeing as he has never played for the Magpies before, he can technically be classed as "like a new signing".
