Luc Nils arrived at Aston Villa in 2000 as a 33-year-old striker who was set to experience his first taste of English football but after distinguished spells on the continent with Anderlecht and PSV Eindhoven, big things were expected.

The Belgian had scored a combined total of 237 leagues goals in 12 seasons and he was seen as a man who could take Villa to the next level after they had finished in sixth position in the Premier League during the previous campaign despite netting just 46 goals.

All was going to plan after his wonder goal against Chelsea in his first league appearance for the club but two games later, Nilis would suffer a horrendous injury with his leg being broken in two places in a collision with Ipswich Town goalkeeper Richard Wright.

It soon became clear that the incident would lead to the end of Nilis's professional career. He never played another game and both Villa and the player himself were left wondering what could have been had he been able to complete a couple of seasons at the club.
