Peter Lovenkrands was reportedly pushed out of Rangers by incoming boss Paul Le Guen rather than voluntarily jumping from a side who had provided him with the best six years of his career, but as the Danish attacker craved an instant return after Le Guen's infamous eight-month stint, he let the rest of his playing days pass him by. He impressed during the start of his spell with Schalke 04 but an injury curtailed any momentum he had built up in the Bundesliga and he was only used sparingly during the final two years of his stay. During that time, he said that he would have "loved" to return to Rangers and that he would have penned a deal immediately had brief negotiations between the two clubs continued. Lovenkrands had some success at Newcastle United as he scored 13 goals to help the club earn an immediate return to the Premier League, but he was unable to put together a consistent run in the top flight. In 2011, Rangers were alerted to his availability but in a bitter blow to Lovenkrands, his former club turned down the opportunity to re-sign him and he would end his career playing for Birmingham City in the Championship.
