10 Premier League Record Signings Who Were A Waste Of Money

4. Erik Lamela

In the summer of 2013 Tottenham Hotspur sold influential attacker Gareth Bale for an astonishing £85M, clearing the way for several new faces at White Hart Lane. One of Bale's replacements, Erik Lamela arrived with the hefty price tag of £32M and the unenviable task of replacing the most expensive player in history. So far it hasn't worked out for the Argentine winger: in his first season and a half, the 22-year-old has only shown glimpses of the talent that led Spurs to splash out so much money for him. Already on his third manager since signing, Lamela has struggled to play consistently and only recently scored his first goal in a 2-1 win against Burnley in December last year. He might still come good, but for that price he should really have made an immediate impact.
