10 Refereeing Decisions That Totally Screwed Newcastle United

6. Phil Dowd Vs Wigan (15.10.2005)

Scoreline: Wigan 1-0 Newcastle Jason Roberts' lone strike was enough to give 10-man Wigan a hard-fought victory against Newcastle United. But the Magpies should have a had a clear penalty after just two minutes that Phil Dowd decided to not award. Alan Shearer's angled ball into the area attempted to pick out Michael Owen and the England international appeared to be hauled back by Leighton Baines. Dowd remained unimpressed. In the second half another clear penalty was turned down after Shola Ameobi was caught by the advancing John Filan as he moved into the area. And in the 64th minute, Shearer headed the ball towards goal and despite it crossing the line, the assistant did not give it and Wigan claimed all three points.
