Brazilian international goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes signed for Spurs in 2008 from PSV Eindhoven for just shy of £8 million. Having conceded just 24 goals in his final campaign in the Netherlands - a season in which he also impressed against Spurs in the old UEFA Cup he was regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in Europe. However, upon his arrival at White Hart Lane, his on-field showings were erratic to say the least. He had brilliant shot-stopping ability, but his handling and willingness to commit himself was terrible and he undoubtedly cost Spurs a number of points and games in his time at the club. Gomes severaly lacked self-confidence - and that's something you simply have to possess to truly make it at the top level - and this was epitomised when 40 year old Brad Friedel arrived to provide Gomes with some competition in 2011. The Brazilian lost his place to the veteran and seemed content to be a squad player. He spent a couple of years out in the cold before finally expressing any kind of discontent at his situation and was loaned out to 1899 Hoffenheim in 2013. After failing to impress in Germany, he left Spurs at the end of his contract and moved to Championship side Watford on a free transfer. At only 33 years old - when he should be in his prime - to be playing in the second tier, having previously played for Brazil, is quite the demise.
