Russian striker Roman Pavluychenko was not best pleased with himself following a game against Manchester City in May 2009 - not only for his profligate performance in front of goal, but for his act of sheer disrespect upon being substituted with 15 minutes remaining. Storming straight down the tunnel, he incurred the wrath of the irked boss Harry Redknapp, who sarcastically applauded his centre-forward for a perceived act of callousness. Pavluychenko certainly knew he had let himself down.
''During the game, I had a couple of chances to score but I didnt take those chances so I was angry at myself when I came off the pitch, not at the decision to replace me. I know it was not my best performance but I blame myself for that and nobody else. I did not mean to cause offence with my actions and I apologise to my team-mates, the coaching staff and the supporters, who have treated me so well since I arrived. - Roman Pavluychenko, May 2009.
His manager had labelled the £13.8 million signing disrespectful, citing the supporters who pay good money as reason enough not to bolt straight down the tunnel in a huff, upon being substituted. At least the former Spartak Moscow hitmans apology seemed genuine enough, however.
