10 Summer Football Transfers That Came Completely Out Of Nowhere
5. David Beckham - Real Madrid To LA Galaxy
Even though David Beckham was far from the main man at Real Madrid during his final season at the Santiago Bernabéu, the former England captain was only in his early 30s and still had the quality to succeed at a top team.
That's what made his out of the blue decision to join MLS team LA Galaxy at the end of the 2006/07 season so unusual.
Though the actual news of his departure came in January 2007, the move itself only went down after Madrid finally lifted the La Liga title at the end of the season. This was the first and only league title Becks won during his time in Spain, and his impressive end to the season meant that Madrid even tried to reverse his transfer to Galaxy.
None of that mattered, though, as 'Golden Balls' had his heart set on a move stateside and would remain in LA for the next five years. This led to a serious increase in focus on the MLS as Beckham was still undoubtedly one of the most famous celebrities on the planet.
There will always be some who question why Beckham decided to live the American dream when he was still capable of performing for a top European club. But, the bizarre move eventually led to him becoming an even bigger star in the States and founding his own team Inter Miami CF. So, it proved to be a rather intelligent move in hindsight.
