10 Summer Football Transfers That Came Completely Out Of Nowhere

4. Kieran Trippier - Tottenham Hotspur To Atletico Madrid

After playing a vital part in England's surprisingly stellar 2018 World Cup campaign, Tottenham Hotspur's Kieran Trippier was on top of the world.

Yet, annoying injuries and a few defensive errors throughout the following campaign meant that he wasn't able to maintain that exceptional international form. That being said, Trippier was still considered a top class right back on his day, so it didn't make sense for Spurs to part ways with the Englishman after just one rather poor season.

But that's exactly what happened in 2019, as the 28 year-old amazingly left the club for Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid.

This perplexing transfer seemed to signal the beginning of Spurs' decline over the course of the 2019/20. Trippier's old manager Mauricio Pochettino was given his marching orders just a few months later after a dismal start to the season and last year's Champions League finalists, now under the stewardship of Jose Mourinho, ended the season in a disappointing 6th place.

Trippier on the other hand has been a mainstay in Simeone's side since joining and helped earn his side a place in next year's Champions League, whilst also making it to the Quarter Finals in the competition.

The deal may have come of nowhere, but Trippier looks like a player reborn in Spain.
