Danny Simpson joined Sunderland on loan from Manchester United in 2007, helping The Black Cats to promotion under former Red Devil Roy Keane. Fast forward two-and-a-bit years later, and after loan spells at Ipswich and Blackburn, and he arrived on loan at Newcastle as The Magpies began their assault on The Championship under Chris Hughton. The right back would make his transfer permanent and go on to make over 100 appearances for Newcastle. Danny was as dependable as they come while in the black and white. While he was never the most gifted player, he always gave 100% and kept things very, very simple. He was part of the solid British core of the squad that performed so admirably in The Championship and the first couple of seasons back in the big time. Without players of Simpson's ilk, goodness knows where Untied would be today. His contribution, as unspectacular as it may seem looking back, certainly can't be underestimated.
