10 Talking Points From The First Round Of World Cup 2018 Group Games
4. Mixed Performances From Stars
Every World Cup begins with a lot of focus on the world's star players, but the truth is that even the game's superstars are still only human. They're capable of making mistakes and having bad games just like anyone else, and we've seen full evidence of that in this World Cup so far.
While one of the world's biggest stars, Cristiano Ronaldo, fully lived up to the hype with a remarkable hat-trick against Spain in Portugal's opening game, some of the game's other big names endured tough times in their first matches.
Argentina's Lionel Messi did his best but couldn't make much of an impact on his side's 1-1 draw with Iceland, and his misery was compounded when the Barcelona man saw his potentially game-winning spot-kick saved by the Icelandic keeper. Brazil's Neymar also had a pretty poor game against Switzerland, seemingly spending more time on the floor than in the opposition box.
We also saw the likes of Kylian Mbappé, Gabriel Jesus, Luis Suarez, and pretty much all of Germany struggle in their opening games. However, it's still early days and these players will have opportunities to set things right in the next round of fixtures.
