10 Things Man Utd Want You To Forget About Louis Van Gaal

9. Quit Barcelona In Acrimonious Circumstances

Manchester United can boast having a manager who has managed some of the biggest clubs in the world, but what they won€™t want you knowing is how badly Van Gaal has ended his association with his former employers down the years. After winning seven trophies in his six years with Dutch Eredivisie side Ajax, which included three league titles and a Champions League, Louis Van Gaal left the club at the end of his contract and joined Barcelona. He won consecutive titles in his first two seasons with the Catalan side, but things were stale throughout, with reports suggesting Van Gaal was struggling to implement his style on the players. The Dutchman fell out with high-profile players who undermined his authority, and his relationship with the media was even worse for the entirety of his tenure. His brash, arrogant and open style didn€™t sit well with the press, who felt Van Gaal was being too candidly honest in his criticism of players, which eventually led to a broken dressing room. €œI had to struggle every day to convince everyone at Barcelona, and especially the players. In this place, in this culture the players always say, 'we are the best'. What has Barcelona won in 100 years? How many Champions Leagues? In six years at Ajax I won more than Barcelona had won in 100 years,€ said Van Gaal, as reported by BBC Sport. He eventually resigned from his post with the Spanish giants, days after losing the league title.
