10 Things We Learned From Darlington Vs. Sunderland

4. Giaccherini Could Be Key This Season

Giaccherini has endured a very hit-and-miss time on Wearside, failing to really nail down a first team slot due to injuries and falling down the pecking order, but his two-goal performance in reply to Advocaat challenging the midfielder in the press was a perfect way to start his campaign. The Italian could perfectly slot into the midfield three alongside Cattermole and Seb Larsson with the player, fans, and coaches alike hoping that this is finally the time for the real Giaccherini to emerge from the shadows. He also got 90 minutes, proving that he will be given chances to prove his worth, even if this does feel like a make-or-break time for him, with the European Championships coming up next year.
