10 Things We Learned From World Cup 2018
3. England Reborn
Even the most optimistic of England fans weren't expecting Gareth Southgate's side to get as far as they did. Most observers predicted that the Three Lions would qualify from their group but probably struggle to get much further than the round of 16. Instead, they finished fourth, ahead of the likes of Germany, Brazil, Spain, and other established international sides.
In doing so, this England inspired a nation and proved that they wouldn't fall victim to the pitfalls of the past. Where other squads had failed, this one succeeded, reigniting the flames of hope that maybe, someday, football really might come home.
The style of play wasn't always the most attractive and work clearly needs to be done to improve the squad and system, but England's rise up the ranks was one of the best stories of this World Cup. For too many years, the Three Lions had flattered to deceive, but this squad can look back proudly on their fourth place finish.
