10 Things You May Not Have Known About The Kansas City Royals
5. Kauffman Stadium Is Simultaneously Historic, Modern And Futuristic
Kauffman Stadium was opened in 1973 as Royals Stadium. It is reportedly the 6th oldest active Major League Baseball stadium. It is one of ten MLB stadiums to not have a corporate name and it has hosted two MLB All-Star Games and four editions of World Series; the Royals notably won a World Series against the Mets in 2015.
Tradition aside, a $250 million renovation was undergone at "The K" between 2007 and 2009. This led to the creation of the earlier-mentioned Royals Hall Of Fame exhibit and various fan amenities. Its scoreboard was replaced as part of these renovations, briefly being ranked as the largest high-definition LED display in the world; Seattle's T-Mobile Park surpassed this ranking in 2013, while the screen at the Dallas Cowboys' AT&T Stadium puts the Mariners' LED to shame.
The first proper concert at Kauffman Stadium in 39 years took place in 2018, thanks to Billy Joel - the last one before that was REO Speedwagon in September 1979. Currently the Royals are contracted to stay in Kansas City through 2030.
