Ossie Ardiles is undoubtedly a Spurs legend. Having first joined the club as a player in 1978, following on from his World Cup win the Argentina, he returned to White Hart Lane in 1993 to manage the club. Having previously managed Swindon Town and Newcastle United, he left his post as West Bromwich Albion boss to join Spurs. Ardiles - who scored sixteen times in 221 league appearances for the Lilywhites and won the FA Cup in 1981 and the UEFA Cup in 1984 with the club - was nowhere near as successful as the manager. Tottenham finished 15th in the Premier League in his one and only full season in charge and, despite the expensive acquisitions of Jurgen Klinsmann, Ilie Dumitrescu and Gheorghe Popescu in the 1994 close season, Ardiles was sacked in October 1994. Spurs were languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League at the time - though this wasn't helped by the twelve point deduction that had received due to financial irregularities at the club. In his 54 league games in charge, he won 16, drew 14 and lost 24. He famously played a five-man front line which include players like Teddy Sheringham, Jurgen Klinsmann, Illie Dumitrescu, Nicky Barmby and Darren Anderton and, while it made for an exciting attacking game, it left Spurs severely depleted at the back and they conceded goals like nobody's business.
