Yes, this is a real thing, it happened only once, and it happened to Anthony Rumble Johnson. Johnson was poked in the eye repeatedly by Kevin Burns throughout their fight at UFC Fight Night 1 and referee Steve Mazzagatti issued several warnings. It was the final eye poke that Mazzagatti missed. Unfortunately for Johnson, the eye poke not only resulted in a loss on his record, but a detached retina that required surgery.
