10 Worst World Cup Teams Ever
3. El Salvador (1982)
Despite the fact that several low-ranked teams like Kuwait and Honduras made their World Cup debuts in 1982, it was El Salvador, making their second World Cup appearance, who turned out to be the worst nation of them all.
El Salvador were drawn in a very tricky group featuring Belgium, Argentina, and Hungary. They lost their second group game to Belgium 1-0 and were beaten 2-0 by Argentina in their final game. Those were two pretty respectable performances, so why do they deserve a spot on this list? Well, their opening group game against Hungary set the record for the worst ever World Cup defeat.
Hungary won the game 10-1, the biggest scoreline the World Cup has ever seen. The match also saw the only ever hat-trick scored by a World Cup substitute, as László Kiss managed to score in the 69th, 72nd and 76th minutes. Another Hungary substitute, Lázár Szentes, managed to net another one in the 70th minute, meaning that the game went from 5-1 to 9-1 in the space of just seven minutes. Astonishingly, despite this dominant scoreline, Hungary didn't even qualify from the group.
