5. Austria Vs. Switzerland (1954, Quarter Final)
This quarter final clash between the 1954 World Cup hosts Switzerland and Austria was an extraordinary game. The teams scored a combined total of 12 goals in the match, which remains a record number of goals scored in a single World Cup game.
The teams played out the game in a sweltering Lausanne climate. The goal-fest began when Ballaman opened the scoring for Switzerland with a terrific strike from just outside the box that sent the ball flying into the net. Astonishingly, three minutes later, Switzerland were three goals up! Austria then began a tremendous comeback, courtesy of Wagner and Korner. Wagner then equalized with a thunder strike, only for Austria to score two more goals in the first half to make the score 5-3. A breathless first half ended with Switzerland pulling one back to go into the break 5-4 down. Phew!
The second half wasn't quite as explosive as the first, but there were still more goals. Wagner completed his hat-trick to re-establish a two-goal lead for Austria. Switzerland's Hügi also wrapped up a hat-trick with Switzerland's fifth goal of the game. The Swiss then went for an equalizer, but a seventh Austria goal sealed Switzerland's defeat. The match ended 7-5 to an exhausted Austrian team.
