11 Legendary Hardmen Who Make Modern Footballers Look Like Wimps

6. Billy Bremner

The Scotman wasn't the biggest footballer you are ever likely to see - far from it, in fact - but Billy Bremner was a giant on the field when it came to leading his side. Famously Leeds United captain throughout one of the most successful periods in their history, Bremner summed up what it meant to be a leader of a side in football's real glory days. He never took a backward step, as his brawl with Kevin Keegan in the 1974 Charity Shield showed, though the FA were in no mood to take that lightly though, and banned them both for 11 matches - a huge number of games, especially considering the behaviour these days that warrants similar response. His merciless approach to tackling earned him a legendary and fearsom reputation amongst football fans - but it shouldn't be forgotten that Bremner was an outstanding footballer, no matter how The Damned United painted him. The trophies he won with Leeds United would certainly justify that.
