11 MORE Players Newcastle Have ALREADY Missed Out On This Summer
11. Tom Ince
A catalogue of sources, including Sky Sports, reported on what was the most obvious link of the summer. Steve McClaren was the man to get Tom Ince's fledgling career back on track last season. After breaking onto the scene with Blackpool, the 23-year-old failed to nail down a regular stating place at either Crystal Palace or Hull City in the big time before Tigers' manager Steve Bruce sent his former Manchester United team mate's son to The Championship. A loan spell with Nottingham Forest saw the winger make six appearances without finding the back of the net, before Newcastle's current head coach took a punt on a player that still has a substantial amount of potential. While at Derby, Ince made 18 appearances, scoring 11 goals as he proved to be pretty much the only bright spark in what turned out to be a dismal second half to the season for The Rams. Derby went on to confirm the permanent signing of Ince for a club record fee of £4.75 million. If there was going to be a man to get the best out for the former England U21 international on the biggest stage in domestic football then it would have been McClaren. What made the link all the more obvious was Newcastle's need for wingers. United are lumbered with Remy Cabella, Gabriel Obertan and Yoan Gouffran in wide areas following the departures of both Jonas Gutierrez and Sammy Ameobi. It's fair to say Ince would have filled a considerable gap in The Magpies' ranks.
