Ranking Sunderland's Signings Of 2014/15 From Worst To Best

10. Santiago Vergini - On Loan From Estudiantes

Despite making 11 Premier League appearances for Sunderland during Gus Poyet's first season, Vergini can be included as a new signing here thanks to a second successive loan deal on Wearside. He played a much more central role this time, featuring both at right back and in the heart of defence for much of the 2014/15 campaign. Unfortunately, Vergini's greater involvement didn't equate to improved performances. His unpredictability and flair with the ball - traits which had made him a cult favourite at the Stadium of Light - quickly became a gut-wrenching annoyance as relegation loomed ever closer. Ultimately, the Argentinian's season will be mainly remembered for his spectacular own goal during that 8-0 loss to Southampton, a cracking volley even the most prolific of goalscorers would be proud of. He nearly gave away a goal in the return fixture too, almost surrendering a precious 2-1 lead with an ill-advised backheel attempt.
