12 Ridiculous Sunderland Transfer Rumours That Never Happened

3. Paul Scholes

Now we approach the top three most ludicrous Sunderland transfer rumours of all time. Paul Scholes is without a doubt one of the greatest English footballers of the modern era, even though we criminally didn't see enough of him donning the Three Lions on his chest - despite making 66 appearances, he could've offered far more. Roy Keane brought a massive influx of Manchester United cast-offs and loanees with him, but some say Scholes was the one he really wanted. He'd stupidly been linked with a move to Sunderland back during the Reid era, and under Keane one particular whisper suggested that the fiery Sunderland boss had played tennis with the flame-haired midfield maestro while discussing a move to the North East. Others say he was merely playing tennis with his old-teammate... Because that's what old teammates are allowed to do... You know, socialise... Rumour-mill nonsense at its finest.
