15 Biggest Opening Day Shocks in Premier League History

6. Wigan 0-4 Blackpool - 2010

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnWen8_e9Oo While it was the Latics who were portrayed as the ultimate 'Premier League underdog' in 2005, Ian Holloway's men surely took that mantle five years later. Only three years prior to their Premier League ascent, they had achieved promotion to the second-tier of English football for the first time in 29 years. Perhaps their climb to the top-flight came too soon, but judging by their four goal salvo at the JJB - nobody would have ever guessed. While Wigan were just off the back off an 8-0 pummelling at Stamford Bridge in May, Roberto Martinez had oiled them well, and had them playing some neat football. It takes some hell of a performance to play a Martinez team off the park, and that is exactly what was produced, as Blackpool announced themselves to the top-flight in style. A team clogged with journeymen and second-rate footballers, it didn't matter a jot, as the Tangerines waltzed through the Wigan defence, scoring three before half-time through a Marlon Harewood brace and a strike from Gary Taylor-Fletcher. Alex Baptiste added a fourth with 15 minutes remaining to cap a truly dream start for the smallest club to ever ply its' trade in the Premier League.
