15 Biggest Opening Day Shocks in Premier League History

3. Aston Villa 3-1 Manchester United - 1995

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgvB2vkNHrc It was the match which sparked the infamous 'you can't win anything with kids' line from BBC pundit Alan Hansen. Almost as if to raise the proverbial two fingers to the media, Sir Alex Ferguson's 'kids' ended up claiming the title at the expense of Newcastle United, but that's not to say that the didn't endure a tricky start. Eyebrows were certainly raised when Aston Villa, who had only just avoided the drop the previous season and would have been relegated by today's league rules, played the Premier League runners-up off the field, to the mirth of a jubilant Villa Park. Manchester United don't make a habit of fluffing their lines when racing out of the starting blocks of a Premier League season, so for a relegation-threatened side to shake them down for all three points was quite an achievement. Following Ian Taylor's early goal at the Holte End, Mark Draper pounced to double Villa's lead, before future Red Devil Dwight Yorke buried a penalty before half-time. A stony-faced Ferguson could only watch as his 'kids' were run ragged in the second half, despite an impressive consolation effort from the sprightly David Beckham.
