Outside of the actual tennis, there is perhaps nothing so synonymous with Wimbledon as strawberries and cream. It is the food of choice if youre attending the tournament, almost like a ritual you have to partake in. And, well, most people seem to. It is estimated the around 28,000 kilograms of strawberries will be consumed during the Championships, accompanied by 7000 litres of fresh cream. Most of the strawberries come from Kent, and arrive fresh each day at 5:30am, before being sold for £2.50. In addition to this, there will also be 350,000 cups of tea and coffee sold, a quarter-of-a-million glasses of Pimms drunk, 28,000 bottles of champagne popped, and the players will chew their way through around 15,000 bananas.
NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far.
A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
