Before his coaching career, McClaren was a midfielder who plied his trade in the lower leagues. He made 305 league appearances and scored 18 goals during a 13-year career in which he represented Hull City (1979-85), Derby County (1985-88), Lincoln City (loan, 1987), Bristol City and Oxford United before retiring in 1992. His one piece of silverware during his playing career was the Football League Second Division title with Derby in 1986-87 - so let's hope his Newcastle tenure is more inspiring than his footballing days...
