16 Things Newcastle Fans Need To Know About Steve McClaren

11. McClaren Was The First English Manager Since 1996 To Win A Major Honour And The First Since 1984 To Reach A European Final With An English Side

Not only did McClaren lead Boro to their first-ever trophy, he almost managed them to a UEFA Cup win as well. When Middlesbrough reached the 2006 UEFA Cup final - knocking out FC Basel along the way, and producing two incredible four-goal comebacks in the quarter-finals and semi-finals - they were hammered 4-0 by an impressive Sevilla side. However, McClaren still became the first Englishman to reach a European final with an English side since Joe Fagan's Liverpool beat Roma in the European Cup final back in 1984. What's more, McClaren was also the first Englishman since Bobby Robson to lift a major trophy (that was back in 1996). Quite impressive really.
