20 Best FIFA World Cup Goals Ever
13. Archie Gemmil - Scotland Vs The Netherlands (1978)
Classic Scotland moments at the World Cup are few and far between. But the team that they took to Argentina in 1978, built around the world class talents of Kenny Dalglish, were heavily tipped to make an impact. It didn't quite end up that way, but the Scots did get their moment in the sun with a memorable victory against tournament favourites the Netherlands.
Nottingham Forest's Archie Gemmill had already given Scotland the lead from the penalty spot before he scored a second with a piece of individual brilliance that gave a perfect demonstration of total football to the team that invented it.
When Dalglish was tackled and tripped, Gemmill found himself isolated on the right flank surrounded by Dutch players. He cut inside, skipping past the first defender, before nutmegging the Dutch defensive star Ruud Krol and evading a lunging tackle from a third, before the slaloming run ended with a clean strike past on-rushing keeper Jan Jongbloed.
Gemmill's goal has since then become so embedded in Scottish culture that it even got a cameo in Trainspotting. Not bad for a moment that ultimately had no impact as the Scots were eliminated anyway and the Dutch made it all the way to the final.
