20 Worst Squads In FIFA World Cup History
2. Zaire (1974)
We make one final visit to the 1974 World Cup before announcing the worst World Cup squad ever and it must be a surprise to many to see Zaire not filling that top spot.
The African nation made their only World Cup appearance in 1974, being drawn into a group alongside intimidating names such as Yugoslavia, Brazil and the not so intimidating Scotland. An unknown name to many football fans at the time, Zaire quickly raised questions for fans such as 'where is Zaire?' and 'how on earth did this team manage to qualify?'.
Zaire's World Cup antics included the famous case of defender, Mwepu Ilunga, kicking away the ball from a free kick before the Brazilian opponents had even taken it. Their World Cup campaign also included a 0-9 loss to Yugoslavia, a 0-2 loss to Scotland and a 0-3 loss to Brazil in their final game.
Now known as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zaire never qualified for the World Cup again but they are surely never going to be forgotten.
