20 Years Later: Why Man United's Treble-Winning Season Will Never Be Bettered

3. Keane's Finest Performance

Picking out one United performance as their all-time best is an almost impossible task, but their comeback against Juventus in the 98/99 Champions League semi-final certainly has to be in contention given how it unravelled.

United had got the better of Inter Milan in the quarter finals to set up a meeting with the Turin giants. They were thoroughly outplayed in the first leg at Old Trafford, equalising in the second minute of stoppage time to give themselves an outside chance in the reverse fixture, despite the fact they had never beaten the Italians (or any Italian team) on their own soil.

The dream seemed over when Filippo Inzaghi scored two within eleven minutes to give his side a 3-1 lead on aggregate, but what followed was a true captain’s performance from Roy Keane.

A headed goal was offset shortly afterwards as he picked up a yellow card that would rule him out of the final if United were to make it there, but there were no tears and no distractions as he led his men like a general on the battlefield. Dwight Yorke would respond by putting the team ahead on away goals, before Andy Cole eventually gave them the victory on the night.

Keane’s messy exit from Old Trafford and falling out with Sir Alex Ferguson overshadow the blood, sweat and tears he gave on the pitch for United over the course of twelve years. Never was his commitment so comprehensively displayed as in this match.
