5 Reasons Why Jose Mourinho Will Be Chelsea's Downfall This Season
5. He Continues To Use The Wrong Players For The Wrong Formation
A problem that has plagued Mourinho's side this season is the players he has at his disposal and how he uses them. Since arriving at the club in 2011, midfielder Juan Mata has led the club's assist charts, and last season created the most goals in the league, yet since Mourinho arrived, Mata has declined rapidly. The Portuguese brought back his old tactics of using solid and dependable players who will rigidly stick to a formation, and Mata does not come into that category. The Spanish midfielder is too fluid and creatively minded for him to be a success in Mourinho's team, which is why someone like Andre Schurrle has been such an unexpected triumph following his arrival at the club in the summer. The German midfielder's tireless running, solid frame and willingness to track back have endeared him to his new boss, and looks to be the benchmark for new Blues signings in Mourinho's second era. However there are inconsistencies in these tactics, with powerful striker Romelu Lukaku allowed to leave on loan for Everton at the start of the season. The young Belgian proved his prowess at West Brom last season, and is the closest Chelsea have to Mourinho favourite Didier Drogba, and fits perfectly into the 4-2-3-1 formation currently being used by the former Porto boss. Instead, he is using Fernando Torres or Samuel Eto'o in the lone striker role, a decision that has already backfired, with the pair scoring just four Premier League goals between them, half of what Lukaku has all on his own at Everton. A baffling decision then, and one that could easily end in Mourinho and the club's downfall come the end of the season if Torres and Eto'o don't start scoring in the league soon.
