Former NBA Basketball star John Amaechi become the first professional basketball player to openly identify himself as gay in 2007 and has been described as one of the world's most prolific gay athletes. Amaechi was born in Boston, MA, but was raised by his English mother in Stockport. He later moved to Ohio and eventually played for NBA sides Cleveland Cavaliers, Orlando Magic and Utah Jazz. In February 2007, Amaechi spoke about his sexuality on US Sports show 'Outside the Lines'. He also released a book, Man in the Middle, which discusses his career and life as a closeted professional athlete. Amaechi is still one of only a handful of US sport athletes to have come out to date. NFL stars Kwame Harris, Wade Davis, Esera Tuaolo, Roy Simmons and Dave Kopay, Major League Baseball stars Glenn Burke and Billy Bean and fellow NBA player Jason Collins have also revealed that they are gay.
