6 Takeaways From Bellator NYC

3. The Weirdest Title Fight Ever?

Michael Chandler was a massive favourite in this bout, defending his lightweight title against Brent Primus. While some predicted the upset was possible, no-one could have possibly expected the sequence of events that would cause an unfortunate end to Chandler's second title reign.

Primus did throw a couple of low leg kicks early, and is adamant this is what caused Chandler's downfall. Whether that's right or wrong, it looked totally innocuous when Chandler, like a catwalk model in impossibly high heels, rolled over his ankle under no pressure. Primus would zero in on the ankle and throw low kicks over and over again. Chandler should have really been looking for a takedown here, but he allowed the referee to stop the fight when he was trying to box but could barely stand.

The problem here was the referee screwed up big time, giving Chandler an injury time-out, which isn't a thing in mixed martial arts. As soon as he stopped the fight, everyone assumed it was over. It wasn't quite, but what caused the bout's end was simultaneously hilarious and heartbreaking.

Chandler was sitting on the stool with the doctors checking out his ankle. He stood to fire up the crowd. He only stood for a few seconds, but one of the commissioners removed Chandler's stool in the meantime. Of course, he went to sit back down, and like that great trick at school, Chandler hit the floor. The ref immediately called the fight.

A rematch here is as guaranteed as anything ever can be in MMA.
