7 Things Learned From Sunderland's 1-0 Loss To Sacramento Republic

3. Giaccherini Is Proving Himself At The Right Time

Sunderland's shining star (if that accolade can be given in the midst of such a limp defeat) was the man under pressure to perform - Emmanuele Giaccherini. The pocket-sized Italian showed glimpses of his ability in an attacking role from central midfield, turning opponents with ease and connecting with a few impressive long balls. His input was limited to 45 minutes, a wise decision given his recent recovery from injury, but Giaccherini still gave fans hope that he is the missing piece in the middle of the park - especially with rumoured targets Jordy Clasie and Georginio Wijnaldum heading to Southampton and Newcastle respectively.
