8 Galacticos Who Nearly Signed For Chelsea

5. Luka Modric

The potential love affair between Chelsea and Luka Modric has been well documented. Publicly courted for the best part of three months in 2011, following agreeable reciprocations from the classy Croat, it was to be Spurs Daniel Levy who poured water on the potential spark between the two. With Carlo Ancelotti and Luka Modric having finally been united at Real Madrid in the interim, it has proven a slightly more difficult task to persuade Modric that his future lies at Stamford Bridge. While the courting and flirting of their summer romance was almost unbearable three years ago, with Modric lusting for the riches and grandeur of Stamford Bridge, Jose Mourinho has revealed that he found it a nigh-on impossible task to try and re-ignite the spark this summer.
''I called Modric only privately but he doesn't want Chelsea. You know I really appreciate Luka Modric and his qualities. But he stays in Real Madrid.'' - Jose Mourinho, July 2014.
The former Spurs playmaker has moved on. Chelsea are no longer a big enough draw for him, as he has bagged himself the a partner of unrivalled spectacle and grandeur. The summer romance of three years ago is dead in the water.
