8 Reasons UFC Legend Georges St. Pierre Should Stay Retired
8. Drug Testing Is Still A Mess
A big part of the reason Georges St. Pierre left the UFC in the first place was the drug testing - or lack thereof - the promotion had in place at the time. In GSP's heyday, the promotion allowed local athletic commissions to be the beginning and end of drug testing for their athletes, unless there was no local athletic commission where the UFC was hosting an event, in which case they farmed the work out privately. That has changed - the UFC has brought in the USADA for out of competition testing - but the system is still a mess, as evidenced by the fact that Jose Aldo was able to avoid a drug test by a USADA official before UFC 189 (which he eventually pulled out of) and have the test administered by a Brazilian athletic commission rep instead. GSP (who voluntarily used VADA, one of the toughest drug testing organizations around, during his career) has noted that the UFC has improved - but frankly, it hasn't improved enough in this area. Sure, Chael Sonnen was busted, but he took the high road, confessed, and made it easy. Other known abusers, like Vitor Belfort, continue to get a pass. Why come back to that?
