9 Biggest Downward Spirals By Former Premier League Clubs
6. Wigan Athletic
Wigan is traditionally a rugby town, but that didn't prevent their football team enjoying a successful eight year stint in the Premier League. In 1995 the club was bought by Dave Whelan, a millionaire who had ambitions to take Wigan to the top flight. Whelan used his connections and money to attract three Spaniards to the club; Isidro Diaz, Jesus Seba and Roberto Martinez, who would later go on to become the Latics' manager. The following year Wigan were crowned Division 3 champions on the last day of the season. They stayed in Division 2 until 2003 when young manager Paul Jewell led them to Division 1. In the 2004-05 season, they clinched promotion to the top flight on the final day. Their first league season saw their highest finish in 10th, but for the majority of their eight year stint the Latics had to fight off relegation. In numerous seasons, Wigan pulled off unexpected escapes from the drop. Wigan made history in 2013 as the first club to ever win the FA Cup and get relegated in the same season. Owen Coyle took over from outgoing manager Roberto Martinez and after replacing Coyle with Uwe Rosler, the club finished 5th in the Championship, losing a play-off semi-final to QPR. The following season, Wigan went through three managers and were relegated to League One. Last summer there was a drastic overhaul in playing staff and Wigan are now fighting for promotion back to the Championship. Whether the club will ever get back to the Premier League is certainly up for debate.
