9 Biggest Downward Spirals By Former Premier League Clubs
7. Blackburn Rovers
Only five teams have won the Premier League since its creation in 1992; Blackburn are the only one of those no longer in the top flight. A founding member of the Football League in 1888, Blackburn Rovers is a club with a rich history, though most of the club's trophies were won before 1930. Local steelworks magnate and Blackburn fan Jack Walker bought Rovers in 1991, and within his first three years in charge he spent £25-million on new players for the squad. They won promotion to the Premier League in 1992 with Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish in charge. Walker's investment paid off quickly with finishes of 4th in 1993 and runners-up the following season. 1995 proved to be the most famous year in Rovers' existence, winning the Premier League on the final day of the season despite losing 2-1 to Liverpool. With Dalglish moving to the position of director of football, the club endured a difficult few years before their relegation in 1999. They spent two years in the Championship before gaining promotion back to the top flight just months after the death of Jack Walker. The club enjoyed an eleven year stay in the top flight which also saw a League Cup success before dropping back down to the Championship in 2012. They've not put up a strong promotion fight since, currently languishing in the bottom half of the Championship table.
