9 Players Real Madrid Probably Regret Selling

8. Roberto Soldado

If Spurs sold this monumental flop in the morning, not one supporter would bat an eyelid. So why on earth would the biggest club on the planet feel any remorse or qualms in getting rid of a striker who managed a paltry two league goals from open play last season? Some players just aren't cut out for the Premier League. Take Diego Forlan for example. As he was awarded the 2010 Fifa World Cup Golden Ball, there must have been legions of Manchester United supporters scratching their heads, wondering how this world-class Uruguayan had stolen the identity of that open-goal missing buffoon who toiled in vain at Old Trafford seven years previously. Of course, Forlan had scored 120 goals in La Liga over the course of six seasons since his exit, compared to a miserly 10 in 63 appearances for the Mancunian outfit. For Roberto Soldado, it looks like he may be suffering from similar. 81 goals in 141 appearances for Valencia, and 33 in 66 appearances for Getafe. These are the interim figures that the profligate White Hart Lane flop mustered between his days on the benches in Madrid and in North London. After all, there was a reason why Spurs were so willing to part with a club-record fee of £26 million to fend off Liverpool for the frontman's services last summer. Had Madrid kept him instead of flogging him to Getafe for £4 million, would he have flourished and racked up such impressive goal-scoring statistics? While the answer remains doubtful, one might suspect that the former Sevilla goal-poacher could have proved a useful asset in a forward line where Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain often went through prolonged dry spells. At the very least, they could have gotten a lot bit more back than the £4 million snip in July 2008.
