Arsenal: 5 Reasons The Gunners Will Win The Premier League

2. Mesut Ozil

I think the £42.4 million signing of Mesut Ozil during the summer took a lot of us back for various reasons. Arsene Wenger has baulked at spending big money a number of times during his time with Arsenal, and when he has chosen to do so it has often backfired. Instead, the Frenchman likes to sign players where he feels he can do a bit to develop them. That might be in terms of improving them as players or adjusting their position as we saw with Thierry Henry years ago. Ozil was though very much the finished product and a player operating at the very top of his game, and at 25 very much in his prime. Nevertheless, Wenger will be relieved that the signing has worked out as well as it has. Ozil is currently the sixth most consistent player in the league with an average rating of 7.64; he has also provided four goals and six assists from his 12 EPL appearances. No player has assisted more goals this season in the Premier League, and his 2.8 key passes per match is also a league high. Perhaps though the great complement we can give the German is that he appears to have raised the level of players around him. Arsenal fans would be hard pressed to decide if Ozil, Ramsey or Giroud have made the greatest impact in what proving to be a very good season for the North London club. It's beginning to look increasingly likely that the Gunners will be crowned the EPL champions this season, and we have to think that is something that would have been deemed highly unlikely prior to the arrival of this man. The other thing that the signing did for the club is it served as a reminded on the kind of business they can do. After all, a lot of us had given up all hope on Wenger spending this kind of money on real quality.
