Arsenal Best XI From Arsene Wenger's 1,000 Games

GK. David Seaman

The legendary Arsenal and England goalkeeper narrowly pips Jens Lehmann to a starting spot in goal. When Wenger arrived at the club, Seaman had already been there for six years but it was under the Frenchman that Seaman had his greatest days and wrote his name in the history books. He made over 500 appearances for Arsenal and 75 for England, where he featured for an astonishing 14 years. In both of Wenger's double winning sides, David Seaman was between the sticks behind the formidable frontline that consisted of the likes of Lee Dixon, Martin Keown and Tony Adams. Together, they made the best defence in Arsenal's history. David Seaman played his part in the success Arsenal had during his time and was also a huge part of that legendary defence. In my opinion, Arsenal never replaced the great Englishman and even Jans Lehmann, who was the main keeper in the invincible era, was eclipsed by Seaman. In the days after Seaman and Lehmann, Arsenal struggled to find a first-choice keeper as they had been spoilt for so long. Manuel Almunia, Lukas Fabianski, Richard Wright and Vito Mannone all had chances but couldn't stake a claim for the long-term. In fact, it's only recently Arsenal have eliminated this problem through Wojciech Szczesny- who in the future may stake a claim for a spot in this team. For now, there's only one choice. David Seaman is arguably the greatest keeper Arsenal have ever had, coming up against Pat Jennings and Bob Wilson for that honour.
