Arsenal Transfer News: £12m Move For Benfica's Garcia

Wenger could continue his summer of spending with Benfica's reliable midfielder.

Caught Offside. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is on the lookout for a strong midfield prospect, and the Spanish international has had previous links to the club. He would be another firm acquisition after a summer that has seen the Emirates club sign Lukas Podolski, Olivier Giroud and Santi Cazorla. At once, Wenger appears to be sprucing up both his attacking game and his midfield integrity. It was previously anticipated that The Gunners would sign Rennes defensive midfielder Yann M€™Vila, but negotiations broke down recently. As a result, if signed up, Javi would essentially operate in the role that Alex Song assumed previously, prior to moving his midfield play further forward and upping his game last term. Javi would be a firm choice for Wenger, given his strong midfield work for Benfica, which helped secure his first senior national team cap. Since his £5m move there from Real Madrid three years ago, he has been a consistently reliable presence. Arsenal's offer will reportedly be in the vicinity of £12m, and of course, Wenger will be looking to let a few names go to cover his summer's expenses. Carlos Vela has departed for Real Sociedad already, and Wenger is likely to move to dump players such as Nicklas Bendtner, Sebastien Squillaci, Marouane Chamakh and Andrei Arshavin as soon as he can.
