Cristiano Ronaldo was actually closer to joining Arsenal than most people realise. After a successful trial period with the club as a teenager, he was offered the number 9 shirt and looked set to sign for The Gunners. 

However, compatriot Carlos Queiroz convinced the Portugal man to instead join Manchester United at the last minute. He went on to score 118 goals in 292 games at United, before joining Real Madrid and asserting himself as one of the true greats. 

Ronaldo has scored 313 goals in just 300 games for Los Blancos, and is close to becoming Madrid's record goalscorer.
