Britain's 50 Greatest Sports Personalities Of 2012

12. Nicola Adams

With three weight classes in comparison to the men€™s ten, Leeds-born Nicola Adams wrote her name in the history books by prevailing in the first of the three finals, defeating Chinese world number-one Ren Cancan to take home gold. Her fellow Brits Savannah Marshall and Natasha Jonas may have fallen in the first round and at the hands of Irish world champion Katie Taylor respectively in their weight categories, but Adams success has seen her became the first female boxer to be awarded an honour from the Boxing Writer€™s Club Of Great Britain, opening the door for youngsters to follow in her footsteps in what was once a taboo sport.

11. Greg Rutherford

The joint British record holder (alongside Chris Tomlinson, who also competed at the Olympics), Rutherford€™s winning jump of 8.31m wouldn€™t have won the title at any previous games since 1972, but it was 15cm longer than the jump of Australian silver medallist Mitchell Watt in what may have been an off-day for some of the world€™s best competitors, but was one of the highlights of Super Saturday for those of us watching at home, as the gold became one of six won by British athletes in the space of one day. Having expressed an interest to switch events to compete in the 100m, it is hard to fathom whether Rutherford could compete with the best at that level, though given Usain Bolt€™s desire to compete in the long jump, the two could experiment by switching places with one another for a time.
