Not learning from their mistakes once again, Chelsea made another mess of the transfer window in 2006. Fresh off winning two titles in a row, they understandably refused to splash out big sums like in previous years, however, they did blow their title chances by meddling with their squad. Of course, the first big misstep of 2006 was buying in Andriy Shevchenko for £30 million. The man who was brought in to deliver the Champions League looked like he was barely fit enough to deliver a paper round. Despite scoring twice in his first three games, he was never able to produce the performances he had for Milan, and was shipped back there on loan after a tough few years at Stamford Bridge. Also in 2006, the Blues got rid of Robert Huth and William Gallas, their two understudies at centre-back, and replaced them with Khalid Boulahrouz. The Dutchman was so bad in his spell at Chelsea that his injury problems were actually a redeeming factor. With John Terry out for large parts of that season, Mourinho called on Michael Essien at centre-half. The Blues did go on to win two trophies that season, but their failure in the league handed the reigns back to Manchester United, who went on to dominate for the next three years.
