Crystal Palace At Christmas - 6 Things We Learned

5. Where Are The Goals Going To Come From?

While Palace are undeniably having a great season, the inescapable fact is that they haven't done enough going forward. One goal in nineteen games from our main forwards simply isn't good enough, even if Yannick Bolasie has actually scored at least a couple of his goals while playing as a centre forward. Playing one up front for the majority of games means that whoever plays there needs to be able to hold the ball up, close the opposition defenders down, and be in the box ready to score. It's a thankless task and one that very few can do well. Wickham fulfils two out of the three criteria really well and the only other option Palace have in this role is Chamakh who is struggling to find form after his lengthy lay-off through injury. Frazer Campbell simply isn't good enough and most would agree that Dwight Gayle struggles in this type of formation. Palace are going to have to find goals from somewhere over the coming weeks and it's a struggle to see where they will come from.
